On Tuesday, September 24, 2019, the entire nation showered love on the 'Sadi Ke Mahanayak' Amitabh Bachchan after he was selected for the Dada Saheb Phalke award - the most prestigious award an actor could receive in his career. But this date has another significance in Amitabh's life - and its story dates back four decades. 37 years ago, on same date, Amitabh was discharged from the hospital and he came home after undergoing a two-month-long treatment following a life-threatening accident on the sets of Coolie.
A video currently going viral on social media, in which Big B is seen getting out of a car as his family, fans and the media welcome him, reminds on of that day. In the video, the megastar is seen touching the feet of his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan and this was "the first time in his life when Amitabh saw him break down". He then goes to his mother, Teji Bachchan, for 'charan sparsh' and she kisses him on the forehead.
"Today the 24th of September is exactly two months from the date when I was injured and I sit here before you as a result of the efforts of the doctors from (Breach Candy Hospital)," Amitabh says in the video.
The throwback video also gives us glimpses of his children - Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Bachchan.
On July 24, 1982, Amitabh Bachchan sustained severe injuries in his abdomen while shooting a fight sequence with his co-star Puneet Issar, in Coolie. So much so that, he was hospitalised and there were no signs of him regaining consciousness, owing to severe blood loss. Millions of his fans around the world offered prayers for his speedy recovery, and on August 2, Amitabh regained consciousness.
After staying in the hospital for around two months, Big B returned to his home in the third week of September and he resumed shooting for other films. To remember his "second birthday" (as his fans call it) in August this year, Amitabh took to Twitter and wrote, "a debt that he will never be able to repay"
"Many are they that remember this day with love and respect and with prayer... I can only say I am blessed to have such gracious thoughts with me... It is this love that carries me on each day... It is a debt that I shall never be able to repay, (sic)" his tweet read.

Amitabh's film Coolie, which hit the screens two weeks after Big B's another film release Pukar, turned out to be a blockbuster in 1983.
Zeenat Aman, who shared screen space with Amitabh in Pukar, earlier revealed how the song Samundar Mein Naha Ke remains "memorable" to her as Big B had shot it "under the sun and between the sand of Goa and everyone was excited to see his energy" after the near-fatal accident.
Amitabh Bachchan, who is still active in films, was recently honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award on September 24 - the same day after nearly four decades of the Coolie mishap. Celebrities including actors, filmmakers and politicians sent their love to Big B for being awarded the most prestigious award.
And this happy coincidence just brings back memories of that near-fatal accident from 40 years ago.
