Three brief excerpts from David McCullough’s book:
They [the Wright Brothers] could be highly demanding and critical of each other, disagree to the point of shouting “something terrible.” At times, after an hour of heated argument, they would find themselves as far from agreement as when they started, except that each had changed to the other’s original position.
Writing his autobiography later, John Cox, publisher of the Dayton Daily News, remember reports coming to “to our office that the airship had been in the air over the Hoffman Prairie…but our news staff would not believe the stories. Nor did they ever take pains to go out and see.” Nor did Cox.
When the city editor of the Daily News, Don Kumler, was asked later why for so long nothing was reported of the momentous accomplishments taking place so nearby, he said after a moment’s reflection, “I guess the truth is that we were just plain dumb.”
It was to be he of all people, the Ohio bee man, who would recognize as no one yet had the genius of the Wrights and the full importance of their flying machine. He would describe in detail what he saw happen in Hoffman Prairie, and further he would describe it accurately. It was not the Dayton papers that finally broke the story—or the Chicago Tribune or the New York Times or Scientific American—but Amos Root’s own Gleanings in Bee Culture.
David Brinkley was asked late in life if he had known about JFK’s affairs. He said no. Yet my oldest sister, born in 1947, knew all about them circa 1960 ( her best friend’s father worked for Capitol Hill). In the past four years, the MSM has missed or downplayed so many stories: the rise of Trump, the fallacious Russia allegations, the Deep State’s corruption. I think it’s a combination of bias and arrogance.
