There were a number of things that didn’t go well for South Alabama on Saturday in its 42-6 loss to Memphis.
Yet, more than anything, it was a botched extra point that got noticed.
With Memphis up 40-0, the Jags got their first - and only - touchdown of the day. A mishandled snap and what appeared to be some indecisiveness led to two more points for Memphis.
“We bobbled the snap,” said South Alabama coach Steve Campbell, who joined me and Lee Shirvanian Monday on “The Opening Kickoff” on WNSP-FM 105.5. "We couldn’t get it down. We’ve had that issue. We addressed it again last night. We had a good practice on it last night.
“Our punter has been our holder, Jack Brooks. He’s done a good job in practice. ... We’ll continue to work it until we can get it.”
South Alabama had just scored when Tylan Morton connected with Kawaan Baker for the touchdown. Morton finished 4-of-12 passing for 105 yards.
South Alabama (1-2) was outgained 530 yards to 248 in total offense. The Jaguars’ six points was the fewest Memphis has allowed since shutting out Arkansas 6-0 in 1993.
