There are now 163 days remaining until Orioles Opening Day 2020. For today, at least, there are two baseball games there for possible entertainment. That’s no guarantee, though, because it could be that either Astros-Yankees at 4:08 or Cardinals-Nationals at 8:05 will end in an undesirable outcome. With the Cardinals getting smoked again last night, they could get swept, making today the last day with two games.
Today is Jim Palmer’s birthday, a fact noteworthy enough for this special mention before we get to the usual birthday segment. The only pitcher to win a World Series game in three different decades turns 74 today. You may have heard that he never gave up a grand slam as well. Here’s hoping for continuing good health from Palmer after the illness that caused him to miss getting to broadcast the last bit of the Orioles season.
Because it’s still the playoffs, there’s not going to be much in the way of Orioles happenings for a little while yet. Former Orioles are out and about, with Buck Showalter reportedly interviewing yesterday for the open managerial job with the Phillies.
It’d be strange for me to adjust to Buck managing again. I figured that the O’s gig was going to be the end of the road for him, especially with all of the finger-pointing that suggested he was one of the prime drivers of anti-analytics sentiment in the organization previously, but with as often as he’s popped up in connection with open jobs this month, maybe that’s not the case. Or maybe the Phillies feel like they just got burned by a pro-analytics, inexperienced manager, so they’re going the complete opposite direction.

Today in 1970, the Orioles won the franchise’s second World Series title, beating the Reds, 9-3, to take the series down in five games. Brooks Robinson was named MVP of the series after racking up nine hits and six RBI in 21 at-bats.
Postseason games in 1969, 1997, and 2014 did not go as well.
One current member of the Orioles has a birthday today, although he didn’t appear at the MLB level in 2019. Happy 27th birthday to reliever Cody Carroll, who arrived here in last year’s Zack Britton trade.
In addition to Palmer, there are a couple of other former Orioles who were born today: 2004 six-game catcher Chad Mottola, and 1982-83 infielder Glenn Gulliver.
