On 7 October 1931, Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born in Klerksdorp, in the then Transvaal province of South Africa.
In 1961 Tutu was ordained as a minister in the Anglican Church.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on 16 October 1984, in recognition of his endeavours for a non-violent end to apartheid.
In 1986 Tutu was ordained as the first black South African Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, and in 1995 he was appointed chairperson of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
In October 2006, on receiving a Zapiro cartoon as a 75th birthday gift, Tutu said, “I am always intrigued because if you will notice, Zapiro always draws my nose peeping into my mouth. I am deeply touched and lack words to express my appreciation.”
