Tammy Henry woke up Monday morning and thought ‘Today is the day.’
Her daughter, Taylor, was pregnant with her first child, who was three days overdue. Taylor had a doctor’s appointment Monday morning, which happened to be Veterans Day.
Not only was Tammy Henry a veteran, but her daughter had served nearly five years in the Navy, where she met the child’s father, Franklin Morales-Monterroso, a six-year Navy veteran.
The stars, and stripes, were aligned.
By 3 p.m. Monday, Taylor Henry was in labor. She arrived at Rochester Regional Health-United Memorial Medical Center about 5:30 p.m. and, at 9:27 p.m., Julian Michael Morales was born.
“I had thought about it all morning,” Tammy Henry, of Batavia, said. “Today is the day. It’s going to happen. what a great honor to have him born into the world on Veterans Day.”
The new grandmother served in the Air Force as military police from 1990 to 1995. Her daughter was born at Wurtsmith Air Force Base in Michigan, a base that is now closed.
This past summer, Tammy and Taylor, pregnant with Julian, made a trip to the former base and to visit the hospital where Taylor was born 26 years ago.
As the due date drew closer, the family began thinking that it would be cool if the baby was born on Veterans Day.
Or Halloween.
“We wanted it to be either on Halloween or Veterans Day,” Morales said. “We have a very big military family, so this is very special. We met in the military. It was meant to be.”
He and Taylor served in the surgical corp in Jacksonville. Morales is from New Jersey. Taylor is a 2011 graduate of Batavia High School and both decided to return to Batavia after their services were over to get jobs and raise a family.
He is working at Hood and attending school. She is planning on returning to school as well.
More military connections: Julian’s middle name, Michael, is after Henry’s uncle, who also served in the military.
And the midwife who delivered Julian? Rene Davis’s husband served in the Army.
All making the birth of Julian more special.
“It is special, knowing I had Taylor while I was in the military,” Tammy Henry said. “That she served her country. I was so happy and honored that she would come back here to raise Julian. I honor everyone who elects to serve. It’s a selfless commitment. It’s an honor to serve your country.”
Julian will know that as he grows up, she said.
As for Julian, who came into the world at 8 pounds even and 20 1/2 inches long? He has obviously not decided.
“For me, the military was the right choice,” Taylor said. “I followed in my mom’s footsteps. Whatever he wants to do, that’s his choice. Whatever suits him.”
One last thing: On Wednesday, United Memorial Medical Center Foundation Director Lori Aratari presented Julian and his family with a star to be put on the hospital’s “Star is Born” wall of fame.
