
In his Oct. 3, 1863 proclamation declaring Thanksgiving a federal holiday, President Abraham Lincoln said it was both “fit and proper” that the U.S. set apart “a day of Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.”
That spirit of Thanksgiving lives on today as people across the U.S. celebrate the holiday that traces its origins to the 1600s when the Pilgrims gathered with their Native American neighbors for a feast.
