Today (November 19) is International Men's Day, a day that looks to raise awareness of positive male role models, men's contribution to society, health and wellbeing and improve gender relations.

'The day has been celebrated in the past in February, according to the International Men's Day website, but has more recently been moved to November specifically before International Children's Day on November 20. The website also says that these six aims are what the day sets out to achieve:

1. To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sportsmen but every day, working class men who are living decent, honest lives
2. To celebrate men's positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, childcare, and to the environment
3. To focus on men's health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual
4. To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law
5. To improve gender relations and promote gender equality
6. To create a safer, better world; where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential

For many people around the world, International Men's Day is a time to support anyone who identifies as male who might be struggling with their mental health. In the U.S, men died by suicide nearly four times (3.54) more often than women according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). Further, the highest increase in suicide is in men aged 50 and over (30 per 100,000), says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
