Benedict ‘Bennie’ Saul McCarthy was born on 12 November 1977 in the City of Cape Town, where his soccer career kicked off.
He began with the Cape Town-based club, Cape Town Spurs and made his first national appearance for Bafana Bafana in 1997 against the Netherlands, when South Africa lost to the visiting side by two goals.
Bennie also made himself popular in the music industry in 1998 when he featured on an album titled Shibobo, by a local kwaito group, TKZee.
This album was aimed at enhancing the first Bafana Bafana World Cup Campaign in 1998.
Bennie has scored 21 goals for South Africa in 46 international caps. His most spoken-about goals with the national team are the four goals he scored in 1998 during the African Cup of Nations against Namibia.
