Ferdousi Priyabhashini
Today is the 73rd birth anniversary of late eminent sculptor-freedom fighter Ferdousi Priyabhashini.
Priyabhashini was born on February 19, 1947 in Khulna. She was the first woman to publicly announce herself a ‘birangana’.
Ferdousi Priyabhashini was also recognised ‘Hero’ by the famed Reader’s Digest magazine in December, 2004, for the valour she displayed in acknowledging herself as a war victim.
After the end of the liberation war in 1971, Priyabhashini stood by the women who suffered at the hands of the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators.
She was conferred with freedom fighter status along with 122 other war heroines in 2016.
Priyabhashini gradually emerged as a sculptor after the liberation war. She used waste materials and turned them into sculptures.
Her works are often devoid of any polish to give the impression of the roughness of her materials and also to go with its natural colour and texture.
She showcased her sculptures in many acclaimed shows in Dhaka and elsewhere. Her first exhibition was jointly inaugurated by artist SM Sulatan and poet Sufia Kamal. Her life and works inspired Oxford-based theatre troupe Theatre Folks to produce a theatre production titled Jamuna in 2015.
Ferdousi Priyabhashini received Independence Award in 2010. She passed away aged 71 on March 6, 2018.
