AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS ICON Rosa Parks was born on this day in 1913. As a prominent community member and activist in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks inspired the city’s bus boycott when she refused to give her seat on a bus to a white man. Parks became a symbol of the civil rights moment and worked alongside local NAACP President Edgar Nixon and minister and activist Martin Luther King Jr. After her death in 2005, Parks became one of only four Americans to lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C.

FEMINIST MOVEMENT PIONEER Betty Friedan was born on this day in 1921. A feminist writer and activist, Friedan is often credited for sparking the second wave of 20th century American feminism with her book “The Feminine Mystique” (1963). She was also the co-founder and first president of the National Organization for Women, which today consists of 550 chapters in all 50 U.S. states. Friedan in 1970 organized the nationwide Women’s Strike for Equality and led its New York City march, which included over 50,000 participants. She died in 2006.
