Today marks the first time Democratic voters will make choices regarding the 2020 presidential candidates but on January 31, 2020, New Jersey-born John Delaney announced his decision to withdraw from the race.
The first Democrat to announce his candidacy, Delaney said his decision is informed by internal analyses indicating his not sufficient to meet the 15% viability in a material number of Iowa caucus precincts, but strong enough to cause other moderate candidates to not to make the threshold, especially in rural areas where he has campaigned harder than anyone.
“It has been a privilege to campaign for the Democratic nomination for President, but it is clear that God has a different purpose for me at this moment in time,” said Delaney. “I leave this race with a profound sense of gratitude to the voters who shared with me their hopes and concerns for our magnificent country, in admiration for the other contenders for the nomination and proud of the work we did to change the debate.”
The Iowa caucus campaign has been defined by a historically large and diverse field of candidates seeking the Democratic presidential nomination — a field that, at its peak, boasted 24 candidates. Today, Iowans will offer their support for the candidate that they think can best lead the United States.
Eight Democratic candidates are mounting competitive efforts in the state, and a weak result may force former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. to abandon the contest.
There are 41 delegates up for grabs, a tiny number considering a candidate needs 1,991 delegates to win the party’s presidential nomination. But Iowa is all about political momentum heading into the next contest: the New Hampshire primary on Feb. 11.
