Oklahoma State basketball: Randy Rutherford was born too soon - Oklahoman.com

“Well, I wouldn’t change it,” Rutherford said. “I liked the era I was in, because I wouldn’t have these guys right here. It’s all good. The game changes and we change. We can always talk about it.”

So let’s talk about it. Rutherford played three years at OSU, 1992-95. Rutherford averaged 13.3, 13.1 and 19.6 points a game in those three years, for a career average of 15.6.

Rutherford’s 3-point shooting percentages were .437, .404 and .418, for a career percentage of .418.

Today, a 41.8 percent 3-point shooter who shoots 9.4 treys a game (as Rutherford did as a senior), would be widely heralded. It wasn’t that celebrated 25 years ago.

Rutherford shot 4.5 and 5.7 3-point shots per game his first two seasons. The uptick to 9.4 was the result of earning Eddie Sutton’s’ trust.

Here’s who reminds me of Rutherford: Buddy Hield. At OU, Hield shot .457 from 3-point range as a senior but just .390 for his career. Hield shot more 3-pointers in total than did Rutherford – Hield averaged 7.1, 7.4 and 8.7 3-point shots over his final three Sooner seasons.

Hield ended up scoring more than did Rutherford – Hield averaged 17.4 points for his career, including a wild 25.0 per game as a senior.

When you factor in pace and shots and teammates (Hield was the focal point of the Sooners; Big Country was the focal point of the Cowboys), their production was quite similar.
