SAGINAW, MI - Cynthia Chaffer is turning 64 years old today. But as a Leap Day baby, she’s celebrating her “Sweet 16th” birthday, since Feb. 29 only comes once every four years.
"They always ask me, when it’s not the 29th, what day do you celebrate on?” Chaffer said. “I do it on March the 1st. Also, I’m kinda unique, I do it on the 28th, too, to confuse people.”
Having a leap-year birthday doesn’t have any negative impacts for Chaffer; she still renews her license on the same day every four years, she said.
“Sometimes, if I have to show my license, they point it out... They might ask me, what does your birth certificate say?” Chaffer said. “They say my husband must really like them young.”
Every fourth year on her real birthday, Chaffer usually celebrates with a big dinner. She plans to celebrate her “Sweet 16” Saturday afternoon with her family at Applebee’s, she said.
More than just on paper, Chaffer said she identifies more with her Leap Year age than her actual age. Her number of “real” birthdays sitting in the mid-teens, she said her 17-year-old granddaughter gets a kick of of being older than her.
“They get shocked, they say I don’t look like 64," Chaffer said. “I still have a lot of energy, I don’t have any medication or a walker like that, so I say (I feel more like I’m) 16.”
