Love is a hard word to define, as it has so many meanings for many different people.
What is love?
Love is a verb because it's always changing but it shows itself to be real when you take action.
Some people love too easily, while others hold their love too deeply inside themselves.
Some people will think first of their family when they hear the word love while some might think of romance.
Some people may hear the word love and think of grand gestures and extravagant dates, while others may think of reliance and responsibility.
Google has a few definitions of love. "An intense feeling of deep affection."
"A great interest or pleasure in something". Both of these descriptions of love are listed as nouns.
Google also defines love as a verb. According to Google, love can also be to "feel great affection for someone" or to "like or enjoy very much".
When I first read this week's love quotes taken from Bible verses, I felt like I was at a loss for what to write. I Googled "Love" almost as a joke; almost to prove to myself how exasperated I was at my own loss for words.
I was picturing myself with a glass of champagne giving a corny wedding toast, "Google defines love as..." and so on, etcetera.
But in the midst of all this hilarity, I found myself reading the definitions and thinking, is that what love is?
If I were introduced to an Alien from a planet where love didn't exist, would this be the way I described love? Is this the way I experience love?
That's when I decided I would scratch the first two definitions outright just based on their classification. Love is not or will never be a noun.
Poetically speaking I guess you can say, "Love is the house I grew up in" or "Love is my mom" and I am sure your mom and the house you grew up in would both be very moved.
But love is not a thing. John Mayer said it best when he said, "Love ain't a thing; love is a verb".
Love is like a marathon. A marathon by itself is a noun. It is the 26.2 miles that you walk, run or physically exert yourself though. But if you take away the running, or walking, or physical exertion, a marathon becomes nothing. It is 26.2 miles for no reason.
That is love. Love without action is nothing.
There are many different ways we can put love into action.
For example:
I love my apartment. It has the perfect layout, the perfect amount of light, and even a washer and dryer. (Any city girl knows that when it comes to city apartments if you have a washer and dryer IN UNIT, that you have found "the one".)
So today I decided I was going to put my love for my apartment into action. I woke up early and I did the dishes. Then I cleaned the entire kitchen. I cleaned the bathroom and organized my books.
I organized my closet, did a bunch of laundry (without leaving my perfect apartment). I swept, dusted, windexed, and swiffered. I took care of it. I actively loved my apartment.
The same kind of care can be taken toward familial love. Actively loving someone can be as simple as making time for them. Facetime your mom!
Call your dad! (it's unlikely he will ever figure out how to properly hold the phone for a Facetime conversation.) Let your kids stay home from school just this once. Show the people who love you, that their love is important to you.
It is also important to actively love yourself. Self-care is a lot more than face masks and bubble baths. Actively loving yourself is showing yourself what you are worth.
You don't have to be exactly where you want to be yet, or even exactly who you want to be to love yourself properly. Actively loving yourself is not realizing that you can do better or be better.
Actively loving yourself is figuring out what steps you need to take to do better an be better. Actively loving yourself is putting yourself on the right track and deciding that you love running track.
