Disney is known for crafting some of the most memorable fairytales of all time. But what happens beyond the happily-ever-after? Secret Society of Second-Born Royals explores just that. Disney+ released its first trailer for the new movie today that shows the forces behind royalty who work to keep up every picture-perfect ending.
The upcoming film follows Sam (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), a rebellious teen living in the kingdom of Illyria who has to live with always coming in second to her perfect older sister, Princess Eleanor (Ashley Liao). But everything changes for Sam when she learns she has a superpowers. “People call me a princess,” she explains in the trailer. “But behind the palace gates and in the shadow of my sister, the soon-to-be queen, it was me, the second-born, who was chosen to protect our kingdom.”
Sam learns about her supernatural gift in summer school, where her mother sends her for constantly misbehaving. There, she meets Professor James Morrow (Skylar Astin), and other second-borns who possess the same trait that gives each of them specific powers. “You guys have superpowers,” James tells them. “There’s a special gene exclusive to second-borns of royal bloodlines, a gene that gives some of us extraordinary abilities. Your abilities are unique to you, alone.”
Each of the second-borns in James’ class is tasked with protecting their royal families from evil forces and making sure that their kingdoms won’t be harmed. And together, the members of the Secret Society have to work to keep the world safe using their powers, all with the help of James’ teachings. “Where the fairytale ends is where our story begins,” Sam says in today’s trailer.
Disney+’s new series also stars Elodie Yung (Daredevil), Niles Fitch (This Is Us), Olivia Deeble (Home and Away), Noah Lomax (The Walking Dead), and Isabella Blake Thomas (Once Upon a Time).
Secret Society of Second-Born Royals premieres on Disney+ July 17. Watch the full trailer in the video above.
