“Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” I have heard that expression or other similar ones for years, but never knew that it was called “Hanlon’s Razor.” It has proven true in many situations in my life, but I am starting to feel that it has been repealed. I am seeing too many counter-examples.
For example, I don’t think it was stupidity that caused the erasure of Hillary’s emails, the loss of multiple FBI and DOJ documents, or the loss of Christopher Steele’s back-up documentation. Nothing in the vendettas against Gen. Flynn, Roger Stone, Papadopolous, or Carter Page seems to be due to accident or stupidity. Words were changed in FBI reports to the detriment of Gen Flynn. I don’t think that was due to stupidity. Although the Wuhan flu may have been released accidentally, everything China has done since then seems to be very deliberately targeted towards hurting Western Countries. I’m sure others can think of more examples.
I think I was happier being surrounded by stupidity than by malice. You might be able to teach stupidity, but malice is permanent.
