Tomorrow is Fathers’ Day. Fathers are pretty well despised in today’s popular culture. Probably for the reason given in this quote. A father does things he does not like to do to protect his family.
Yes, that may mean fighting to defend them. But it means more than that. It means going to a job you despise – with a smile on your face – to provide the wherewithal to give them the food and shelter they need. It means setting an example for your children to follow, when you would rather be following your own interests. It means putting aside immediate pleasures for the long-term benefit of your family. It means scaring off the unworthy boys chasing after your daughters, but forcing yourself to step aside when someone worthy of your daughters comes along. It means disciplining your sons when they do something egregiously stupid – even, or perhaps especially, though it was the same egregiously stupid thing you did at their age.
None of this is fun. (Okay, maybe chasing off unworthy boyfriends is.) But it is necessary to provide for your family and ensure your children grow up to be functioning adults. (Producing functioning adults is the real mission of a father.) And perhaps that gives a clue as to why popular culture holds fathers in such low esteem. Modern popular culture is about fun first and foremost, not about providing for others or preparing for the future. Responsible fathers are a rebuke to popular culture, so they have to be destroyed.
Fatherhood is about accepting the responsibilities of being an adult and passing on those values. If you do a good job, the reward is worth the aggravation.
