It was just 60 years ago today, June 19, 1960, when the thunder of engines shook the ground in Concord, North Carolina. For all you NASCAR fans out there, this 1.5 mile legend was born today. Charlotte Motor Speedway, the home of the Coco-Cola 600, has dazzled fans for decades. Originally, Coco-Cola was not the sponsor, and the race was called the World 600 up unto 1984.
However, it almost was not to be. Partners Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner had limited funds to begin with. Also, while digging, they found a solid bed of granite, which ate up their money as the dynamite blew the granite. To make matters worse, rain, snow, everything it seemed, was working against the owners. Even the subcontractor who was paving the speedway threatened to quit, only for Turner to hold the man at gunpoint until the job was done. Sadly, the beginning history of the Charlotte Motor Speedway was bankruptcy. Smith and Turner would end up having to hand over the Speedway, though thankfully the motors still run on her today.
