Lin-Manuel Miranda is Alexander Hamilton and Leslie Odom Jr. is Aaron Burr in Hamilton, the filmed version of the original Broadway production.
These inspirational quotes from Hamilton will help us in any time of need.
Hamilton has become a phenomenon. People have come from all over the world and paid a substantial amount of money to see it live. Because of the latter, it’s not a musical that everyone has the privilege to witness. Thankfully, Disney+ gave us the opportunity to see the performance when it released over the weekend.
In short, Hamilton is beautiful perfection. The music, the costumes, the emotion in every song hits your heart like an arrow from cupid. The one thing I wasn’t expecting was to take away quotes that we can use in our lives.
Throughout the musical, you’ll find yourself picking up lines that you can relate to. This writer certainly did. After the first five minutes, the desire to grab my notebook and write was overwhelming. The quotes kept coming, and the words couldn’t get written down fast enough. Then, a lightbulb popped up. Why not share these thoughts and quotes? Here are some of the quotes that may help us in our lives.
1. “Talk less. Smile more. Don’t let them know what you’re against and what you’re for.”
This was the first Hamilton quote that stuck out. While it may have seemed rude, the quote makes sense. This may seem like terrible advice, but not always. Sometimes, keeping your plans to yourself can be a smart thing. When you tell everyone what’s going on in your life, you leave the door open to criticism. Sometimes, that critique isn’t something you’re ready to handle. Think of it like a game of poker. You have to keep people guessing. The element of surprise is an underrated weapon. A tool that works in life.
2. “When you’re living on your knees, you gotta rise up.”
Imagine living and feeling like you’re less than nothing. You’ve spent your life being beaten down physically, verbally, and emotionally. At some point, you’ll start to like there’s nothing you can do. No. There’s always another option. “You gotta rise up.” This is easier said than done. It’s difficult to overcome hardship, especially if you’ve been abused in any way. However, beating it is an option worth trying. After defeating whatever oppressed you (it could be mental as well), it’ll make your victory that much sweeter.
This writer speaks from personal experiences. Things aren’t always easy in this world. Mental health issues are never easy to get a hold of. Then there’s the idea of being told that you’re less than because of the color of your skin. All of this can be overwhelming. Nonetheless, I gotta rise up.
3. “I may not live to see our glory/But I’ll gladly join the fight.”
Yes, this quote may sound morbid. But it doesn’t have to be. This doesn’t mean you have to be a martyr. There’s another way you can look at this. Some people want to be remembered. They need their time on Earth to have meant something. Unfortunately, we may not always be around to see how the things we’ve done have affected people. When people protest, speak up for other people, or are just nice people, we don’t know the ripple we cause. The good we do in this world may not be seen to us, but it’s there. We may not see it, but at least we were there for the fight. We should remember that everything we do means something.
4. “What might have been if I didn’t size him up so quickly?”
The cliché phrase of never judging a book by its cover remains true. By doing this, you miss a plethora of opportunities. You miss out on wonderful friendships, interesting conversations, or, in the case in Hamilton, love. Imagine the way history may have changed if Angelica Schuyler didn’t judge Hamilton for his status. Think of all the opportunities we all miss when we don’t find out about a person before we judge them. We could have had the times of our lives, going on incredible, life-changing adventures. All we have to do is wait before we judge.
5. “I am inimitable. I am original.”
Whatever you do in life, remember this phrase. There are going to be people who do things similar to you, but they don’t do them like you. We see this in life every day. Rappers who sound like others, but they aren’t the same. The feeling isn’t exactly like the other. Two chefs can make the exact same dish, and it’ll taste completely different. That is all of us. Even as this writer types, someone could be working on the same article and our words will differ. You could be reading this and have a new perspective of what’s being said. Never think you’re like someone else. You are original. No one can take that away from you.
6. “How do you write like you’re running out of time?”
We all have things that we’re passionate about. For Hamilton, it was righting wrongs. His power came from his writing. He used his talent for words to make a change. This is all of us with our dreams and passions. From the outside looking in, it can appear confusing. People may wonder why you sacrifice so much for the things you love. For the people chasing a dream, we get it. It does feel like you’re running out of time. You want to strike while the iron is hot. Other times, you’re just into what you’re doing. You don’t even realize how long you’ve been working on your project. It seems like you’re working like you’re running out of time. In actuality, you’re just excited to see the process of your dream.
7. “You forfeit all the rights to my heart. You forfeit all the rights to my memories.”
When you’re hurt by a person you love or admire, it’s never easy to get over. For Eliza Hamilton, it was when she found out Hamilton cheated. She’d been with him through the good and the bad and stuck by him. Only for him to be with another woman. He betrayed her. She was justifiably hurt. A lot of us have experienced this kind of pain. Not just from a lover, but from people in general. Eliza’s quote may help us going forward. They don’t deserve to have space in our hearts and memories. They forfeited that right when they did something unforgivable. A tough task that’s worth completing.
There are more quotes throughout Hamilton that may mean more to you than these. For this writer, these are the ones that stuck out. Like the quote, “I am original,” you may interpret these messages differently. I suggest watching (or rewatching) Hamilton. Sit back and see what quotes stuck out for you. Which ones hit your emotions the hardest. Take them and use those words to help you make it through your everyday life.
