In 1962, some of Dr Radhakrishan's students approached him for permission to celebrate his birthday, and he requested them to observe it as teachers' day, to recognise their contributions to the society. Since then, India has been celebrating teachers' day on September 5th.
Being one of the greatest teachers, he believed that "True teachers are those who help us think for ourselves." Besides Dr Radhakrishan, many legends have talked about teachers and their influence in life.
Let's check out some popular quotes about teachers:
“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”
Albert Einstein
“I believe there is no other profession in the world that is more important to society than that of a teacher.”
APJ Abdul Kalam
“Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire.”
W.B. Yeats
“I cannot teach anybody anything, I can only make them think.”
Socrates
“Teachers are the backbone of any country, the pillar upon which all aspirations are converted into realities.”
APJ Abdul Kalam
"The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery."
Mark Van Doren
"Teach love, generosity, good manners and some of that will drift from the classroom to the home and who knows, the children will be educating the parents."
Roger Moore
