Toronto's mayor has proclaimed today as John Candy Day.
Oct. 31, 2020 would have been the Newmarket-born actor and comedian's 70th birthday.
“It’s our way of remembering a beloved actor and comedian with roots in Toronto,” Mayor John Tory said on Twitter. “Proud to help honour the legacy of John Candy on what would have been his 70th birthday.”
Candy rose to fame in the 1970s as a member of Toronto’s The Second City, and went on in the 1980s to star in a series of succesful movies, including Stripes, Splash, Home Alone, Spaceballs, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck.

He died of a heart attack at the age of 43 while filming Wagons East in Mexico in 1994.
“His sudden death was felt deeply in our City and around the world,” Tory said. “His legacy lives on through his family, his iconic performances and his induction into Canada’s Walk of Fame and the East York Hall of Fame.”
