Back in Time is ED’s newspaper-like column that reports an incident from the past as though it has happened just yesterday. It allows the reader to re-live it several years later, on the date it had occurred.
Harivansh Rai Bachchan is a name among the most eminent poets of India who lived a distinguished life and left a legacy of great significance.
Born on 27 November 1907 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India, the poet was named Harivansh Rai Srivastava initially.
However, since he was a staunch opponent of the caste system, he gave up on his birth surname and acquired ‘Bachchan’ as a pen name for himself. Later on, he happened to be widely known as Harivansh Rai Bachchan.
Bachchan’s Significant Works
During his days of being an active poet and writer, Bachchan composed many inspirational and heart-warming poetic pieces.
One in a lot of many is his poem Madhushala (The House of Wine) which was published in 1935. It is among the most notable works of Harivansh Rai Bachchan which enhanced his demand in large-scale public poetry readings called ‘kavi sammelan’. It was inspired by American novelist Fitzgerald’s translation of Omar Khayyám’s Rubáiyát.
Similarly, the poet’s Agnipath carved an unparalleled niche for itself among the most admired poetries of India.
The poet’s son and Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan has also been seen fondly reciting the verses of his father’s poems on many occasions.

A Glance At His Family
Harivansh Rai Bachchan married social activist Teji Bachchan after the death of his first wife Shyama Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan and Ajitabh Bachchan are the two sons of the poet with his second wife.
Strings Connected To Bollywood
Besides the enthusiasts of Hindi poetry, Bollywood has also admired and adopted Bachchan’s poems from time to time in various movies.
This includes a famous Hindi song ‘Rang Barse’ from Silsila, couplets of his creation ‘Agneepath’ in the movie Agneepath, and lines from his poem ‘Koi Gata Main So Jata’ in the movie Alaap. All of these starred Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role.
Admirations And Recognitions
In the words of a Times writer, “Bachchan was one of the greatest writers of modern Hindi literature and represented the last generation that was inspired by Gandhian idealism and the Nehruvian quest for social harmony.”
During his academic days, Harivansh Rai Bachchan was deeply influenced by the independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. Later, he also served the Nehru government post-independence. He was facilitated with Padma Bhushan in 1976.
Today marks the eminent poet’s 113th birthday. We remember his remarkable contribution to the literary world of India with his commendable creations.
