Syracuse, N.Y. — As people everywhere celebrate New Year’s Day and an end to 2020, a few Central New York families had even more to celebrate today with the birth of the area’s first babies of 2021.

The first baby was born at Oneida Healthcare’s Lullaby Center in Oneida. Baby Sebastian Michael Zangari was born at 1:41 a.m. to parents Amanda and Christopher Zangari, of Rome. Baby Sebastian weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long.

Baby Isabelle Costa was born at 1:50 a.m. on New Year's Day 2021 at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center in Syracuse. Her parents are Ella and Nicholas Costa, of Utica.Courtesy of St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center
Just nine minutes later, baby Isabelle Costa became the first baby born in Syracuse in 2021. Baby Isabelle was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center to parents Ella and Nicholas Costa, of Utica. Isabelle weighed 3 pounds, 8.4 ounces and is being cared for by the hospital’s NICU staff. Isabelle will be joined at home by her 15-month-old big brother, William.

At 4:22 a.m., baby Carter Chase Jurica was born to Janae Crocker at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. Baby Carter weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces and was 19 inches long.

Baby Ivan Christopher Bennett was born at 4:45 a.m. on New Year's Day 2021 at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca. His parents are Shannon O'Hara and Kenneth Bennett, of Trumansburg.Courtesy of Cayuga Medical Center
At 4:45 a.m., baby Ivan Christopher Bennett was born at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca. He weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. His parents are Shannon O’Hara and Kenneth Bennett, of Trumansburg.

Ammylee Roman-Martinez, of East Syracuse, now has the honor of being mother of two New Year’s Day babies. After giving birth to a baby girl on New Year’s Day three years ago, she gave birth to baby Jesus Daniel Dueno at Upstate Community Hospital in Syracuse at 9:59 a.m. The baby boy weighed 5 pounds, 6 ounces and was 18.5 inches long.
While these babies were the first of 2021, they’ll be far from the last. In 2017, more than 227,000 babies were born in New York.
