The 2021 Babies are coming! UNICEF has estimated that New Year's Day will welcome 371,504 babies around the world on New Year’s Day.
According to estimates, over half of all January 1st births are estimated to take place in 10 countries. India is projected at 59,995. China may have 35,615. There are 21,439 set for Nigeria. 14,161 in Pakistan. Indonesia on tap for 12,336. Ethiopia is predicted for 12,006. The United States of America has 10,312 potential births. Egypt with 9,455, Bangladesh with 9,236, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo rounding out the estimates at 8,640.
140 million babies in total are expected to be arriving in 2021 with an average lifespan of 84 years. UNICEF will also mark its 75th anniversary this year. As the months tick by, they will be celebrating this Silver Anniversary with events and announcements. They will be spreading word on the company's long-standing and tireless work protecting children from conflict, disease, championing their right to survival, health and education.
So who kicked off the festivities? Who was the first American baby of all to call 2021 their year? That baby was Elena Jean Elizabeth Iglesias Rippel who, at seven pounds, 10 ounces, and 47 centimeters, showed up in Guam. The country is also known as "Where America’s Day Begins." She was delivered by Dr. Thomas Shieh at Guam Memorial Hospital to Marlena Iglesias and Eugene Rippel.
The birth occured mere seconds into the new year and, with a projected due date of January 15th, the role of New Year Baby was as surprise for her and her family.
"I started feeling contractions and the normal pre-labor signs, which was why I was admitted," mom Marlena Iglesias told Pacific Daily News. "While everybody was outside counting down to the New Year, they were helping count my contractions and timing it. After my baby girl came out, they advised she had been born seven seconds exactly after 12 o'clock."
There were few media moments or pictures snapped of Elena Jean due to COVID restrictions. In years past, moments like this would be akin to a Hollywood premiere. Babies born on January 1st typically bring new hope and a sense of excitement. Her somewhat subdued entrance into the world is symbolic of the year we are leaving.
Archway Inc. still managed to lead a group of local businesses and individuals in celebrating the baby's birth. The company collected donations to support of the "I (heart) Guam New Year Baby" program.
Elena's family was overjoyed with her arrival and also overjoyed to receive a prize package worth over $6,500. The gifts included an assortment of supplies, gift baskets, certificates to local restaurants and stores, plus free fuel and cash. Of course, the biggest gift of all was their new daughter. For The Rippels, 2021 is already off to a better start. Hopefully the same can be said for us all.
