CROMWELL — Every morning, Covenant Living of Cromwell resident Henry Millan steps into the hallway outside of his apartment to hand write a quote on a white board attached to the wall outside of his door.
His late wife started this tradition more than 15 years ago, and he’s kept her memory alive in working on the project for seven years, according to a press release. The posting of quotes has turned into something residents, visitors and employees at the senior living community look forward to every day.
“It’s really quite magical regarding the responses I get from people who take a moment to stop and read the quotes,” Millan said in a prepared statement. “I often am told the quotes are just what someone needed that day to lift their spirits or maybe just give them a chuckle to brighten their mood.”
Millan, a retired pastor and family therapist, pulls quotes from the many books he’s collected over the years, according to Covenant Living. Others may be from a past sermon he’s given or a phrase he’s recently heard. The quotes may be inspirational, philosophical, humorous or a biblical in nature.
“Henry’s quotes have become a staple here at Covenant Living and they really do touch the heart and soul of those who are passing by to stop and read them,” Heather Knochel, Covenant Living director of resident services, said in the news release. “I’ve taken pictures of several quotes that have really gotten to me personally. We’re all so glad he continues to do this.”
Over the past seven years, he’s curated more than 2,500 quotes, the release said. “I sometimes ask myself ‘what’s the good in doing this?’ Then someone will come up to me and say the quote from that day is what kept them going,” Millan said.
“Hearing a response like that is why I continue to share the quotes with everyone. I never imagined the impact this would have,” he added.
