Following the on-ice session, forwards Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Michael Frolik, and interim head coach Dominique Ducharme spoke with reporters via Zoom.
Here are a few highlights from their respective chats:
Kotkaniemi on the acquisition of veteran pivot Eric Staal:
I'm super excited that he's coming to play for us. I'd love to get some tips from him. He's a hell of a player. He's had a long career in the NHL. It'll be great to have a chance to play with a guy like that every day. I can learn a lot of things from him. He's a good faceoff guy. He's a really big centreman. I think I can take a lot of things from his game.

Kotkaniemi on staying in touch with Joel Armia during his mandatory quarantine after contracting a variant form of COVID-19:
I've been on FaceTime with him a little bit. I believe he's doing pretty good right now. It's a really unfortunate situation. He'll be back soon.
Frolik on watching from afar and waiting for his turn to play, which has finally arrived:
It's been hard. It's been tough. I tried to keep getting ready. I waited a little longer than I wished, but tonight I'm going to be in. I think I'm ready. Everything that happened last week didn't help much, but we had two practices and I felt good out there. I've been waiting for this chance, so hopefully it's going to go well.

Frolik on feeling included in the group even though he hasn't been in uniform:
The guys were great. When you're not in, you're on a little bit of a different schedule. There's a great group of guys here. They always tried to cheer me up a little bit. The last game when I came to the room, all the guys were excited that I could be in. Obviously, it didn't happen. But I'm excited to play tonight. I'm honored to put the jersey on.
Ducharme on his message to the players heading into a big matchup versus Edmonton after an extended layoff:
We have to control what we can control. The first thing is our involvement, the way we move, our structure and our playing style. We have to keep things simple with the puck, especially at the start of the game. That's how we'll get back on track and find our execution.

Ducharme on Frolik's effort level since joining the Canadiens:
Every day, he shows up and works extremely hard. He's a guy that does extra on the ice and does extra in the gym. There's nothing to say on that side. He's a real pro. Obviously, with the number of players, taxi squad, cap situation and so on, it's not an easy situation for a lot of guys around the League. I think he deserves to be coming in tonight and playing that first game with us.
