International Tiger Day: Date, history, significance, celebration, theme, messages, images and quotes - India Today

For thousands of years, the tiger has been the most iconic of the big cat family. They are powerful, gorgeous, and invoke in many a feeling of wonder and admiration. Though they are adored as the magnificent striped animal that is vulnerable to extinction. At the beginning of the 20th century, the number of wild tigers dropped by 95 percent.

This day is to raise awareness of the largest wild cat in the world. Tigers have amazingly diverse habitats: rain forests, grasslands, savannas, and even mangrove swamps. Human activity has led to 93% of the loss of historical tiger lands. Saving tigers means saving forests, which is important to maintain the health of the planet Earth. Tigers are solitary animals with an association between mother and offspring. They roam across large areas also known as the home ranges.

History:

This day was founded in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia to raise awareness about the loss of the tiger population globally. The tiger range countries have resolved to conserve these species globally. The commitment of WWF's is aimed at Tx2- the global goal to double the number of wild tigers by 2022.

Date:

Every year, International Tiger Day is observed on July 29.

Significance and Theme

According to the World Wildlife Fund(WWF), it is estimated that only 3900 tigers remain in the wild, whereas in some areas, like Southeast Asia, tigers are still in crisis and declining in number. The theme for International Tiger Day is based on "Their Survival is in our hands"

Reasons behind the decrease in the tiger population:

Poaching and illegal trade: Each body part of the tiger is in huge demand for its long
Habitat Loss:95 percent of the tigers have lost their historical ranges due to human activities. They need natural habitat for their survival.
Climate Changes: The rise in the sea levels is wiping out the Sunderbans- a large mangrove forest area shared by India and Bangladesh on the coast of the Indian Ocean. It is the only coastal mangrove tiger habitat in the world, with the largest tiger habitat of the Royal Bengal Tigers.

Celebration:

Most people are not aware of the rising threat to the wild tigers. You can raise awareness of the issue by sharing videos, infographics, and suitable content to involve more people in this cause. You can also raise funds for tiger charity for the well-being of tigers.

Ways to conserve tigers:

  • Conserve Natural Habitats
  • Controlling Climate Changes
  • Prefer Sanctuaries/Reservoirs to Zoo
