FRANKENMUTH, MI — Frankenmuth icon and Bavarian Inn matriarch Dorothy Zehnder is celebrating her 100th birthday.
Zehnder, a co-founder of the family-owned Bavarian Inn Restaurant and a Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame inductee, turns 100 on Wednesday, Dec. 1.
Zehnder’s family says she has been instrumental to the Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn and the many operations under that name for 80 years, and she still works almost every day.
The Bavarian Inn matriarch was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame last year. She’s also a Saginaw Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and the author of three cookbooks: “Cookies and Bars,” published in 1986, “Come Cook with Me,” published in 2011, and “From My Kitchen to Yours,” published in 2014.
The Reese native founded the Bavarian Inn with her late husband, William “Tiny” Zehnder.
Today, at full employment, the Bavarian Inn Corp. has a workforce of approximately 1,000, serves thousands of people a day, and serves approximately 900,000 meals annually.
The Bavarian Inn ranks in the top 50 largest family-run restaurants in the country.
When she’s not working, Zehnder enjoys spending time with her three children, 10 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
Fans are invited to send Zehnder birthday greetings via email at events@bavarianinn.com.
