Quote of the Day: Regrets for the People I Couldn't Save – Ricochet - Ricochet.com

“It was my duty to shoot the enemy, and I don’t regret it. My regrets are for the people I couldn’t save: Marines, soldiers, buddies. I’m not naive, and I don’t romanticize war. The worst moments of my life have come as a SEAL. But I can stand before God with a clear conscience about doing my job.” – Chris Kyle

Tragically, Chris Kyle died at the age of 38 at the hands of a man he was trying to help after he had left the military; he was shot by this ex-Marine who had a long history of mental illness.

It’s worth taking a moment to reflect on how we try to influence and have an impact on the lives of others. When we get caught up in the day-to-demands of life, it’s easy to forget that every day we have the opportunity to make a difference in another person’s reality.

Most of us will not have to fight the inner and outer battles that Chris Kyle fought. He was clear on his purpose and the demands of fulfilling it. And he knew he was doing the right thing in his role as a sniper in the military. He lost his life tragically, not in his military assignment, but in helping another human being.

Now and then we can ask ourselves: am I living in a cocoon, or reaching out to others? Am I aware of the differences I can make with others, through a friendly smile or a kind word?

The world counts on those of us who can transcend the misery around us and bring kindness and warmth to those who need it.

It’s the very least we can do, and it is worth its weight in gold.
