Each day, we select a quote about the Minnesota Vikings, uplifting the sentiment of the day or highlighting something notable.

The remark can come from a Vikings player, coach, writer, fan — or anybody, really. Selection of the quote is arbitrary. The excerpt may be insightful, humorous, groundbreaking, outlandish, or foolish. If you have a quote of the day (your own or from someone else), please send it to DustinBakerNFL@gmail.com.

This quote is from February 19th, 2022, posted by Rick Sosa on Twitter. Sosa is in charge of The Purple Code, a social media network covering the Vikings.

Sosa said this on Saturday:

“No, I don’t want Kirk Cousins at $40+ milion per year. #Skol”

And here’s the official tweet:

On the surface, this remark from Sosa is not groundbreaking, right? Correct. However, Sosa is one of the staunchest advocates for Kirk Cousins in the Vikings community — and even he doesn’t want Cousins back at a gigantic price.

The pro-Cousins and anti-Cousins camps sprouted in 2018 when Minnesota collapsed down the stretch and missed the postseason. The season was Cousins’ first with the Vikings. Then and there, Cousins’ contract was blamed — for better or worse — and the “money part” of the Cousins debate followed ceaselessly.

All debates on Cousins are rooted in his price tag. Write that down and remember it.

Then, somewhere along the line, those who believe Cousins is worth $33 million per season — a respectable offensive line in front of him would be swell — were erroneously labeled as Cousins dieharders. Some folks also surmise Vikings fans are more loyal to Cousins than the team itself. This is an example from January:

But in the real world, even the most ardent of Cousins supporters don’t want the quarterback back with the Vikings on a contract worth $40 million per year. Vikings fans, foremost, are fans of the team — not a single player.

So, use nuance when evaluating the Cousins “trade him or extend him” discussion. The men and women who envision the Vikings without Cousins don’t tend to believe he’s utterly lousy — they just feel he’s overpaid. On the other hand, those supporting Cousins have a boundary on his projected price tag.

Common ground can be found among fans instead of the current entrenchment on the Cousins topic.
