Quote of the Day: Those Soi-Disant Dark Ages – Ricochet - Ricochet.com

“We think of medieval England as being a place of unbelievable cruelty and darkness and superstition. We think of it as all being about fair maidens in castles, and witch-burning, and a belief that the world was flat. Yet all these things are wrong.”

The Grauniad’s obituary for one of Monty Python’s stalwarts (Terry Jones was born eighty years ago today, on February 1, 1942)  equates his love of, and defense of, medieval culture to “historical revisionism.”

Is The Grauniad (for perhaps the first time in recorded history) correct? Or is there more to the story?

I’m warning you: Fighting words.
