Each day, we select a quote about the Minnesota Vikings, uplifting the sentiment of the day or highlighting something notable.

The remark can come from a Vikings player, coach, writer, fan — or anybody, really. Selection of the quote is arbitrary. The excerpt may be insightful, humorous, groundbreaking, outlandish, or foolish. If you have a quote of the day (your own or from someone else), please send it to D.Baker@vikingsterritory.com.

This quote is from March 24th, 2022, via email from Larry of Long Beach, Mississippi:

“In the NFL, there are no 2nd stringers. Only starters waiting for their opportunity.”

– Larry | Vikings Fan

Larry’s quote is apropos because unless the Vikings start targeting some cornerbacks, they will be forced to rely on his philosophy as a solution.

As of late March, the Vikings have one starting cornerback on the roster, Cameron Dantzler, with the rest as second-stringers, described by Larry. Perhaps the team knows something the rest of the world does not about Harrison Hand, Kris Boyd, or Parry Nickerson. If those men don’t blossom into instant starters, though, the team must sign free-agent corners or draft a couple in April.

More broadly on Larry’s point, this is precisely how Everson Griffen rose to power. It took Griffen five seasons to become a full-time starter, habitually considered a backup defender from 2010 to 2013. When Mike Zimmer arrived, Griffen took off — or “starters waiting for their opportunity” occurred in real life.

The Vikings choose 12th in April’s draft.
