Winston played linebacker on the two best defensive teams in Vikings history — the 1970 and 1971 teams.
He was a lifelong Vikins, draft in 1962 a year after the franchise played its inaugural season. All told, Winston ranks eighth in Vikings history for games played (191), participating in more contests than Cris Carter and Fran Tarkenton.
Winston graduated from LSU in 1961 and even manned offensive guard duty in college while still filling the linebacker position.
Winston was 81.
