Roberta (Birdie) Walczak celebrated her 90th birthday on Oct. 16 at Harvest Chapel Free Methodist Church on Matteson Street, Fredonia. One hundred of her friends and family attended from Chautauqua, Erie and Cattaraugus counties.
Various groups that she was associated with over the years attended, such as pinochle players, ushers from The 1891 Opera House and Rockefeller Art Center, Harvest Chapel members, residents and staff from The WCA Home, and a friend Birdie has known since she was 8 years old. The Community Room was decorated in pink and white with specially-designed “ice cream sundaes” made from pink, white, and red artificial carnations adorning each table. Light refreshments were served.
Michael Ferguson talked about facts from 1932, which is the year Birdie was born. Then he led everyone in a toast to honor Birdie. This was followed by Andrew Waag playing Happy Birthday on his trumpet. There was a surprise zoom visit with a special friend in Florida. A slideshow of past pictures of Birdie with friends and family streamed throughout the afternoon for all to enjoy.
Birdie loves Dove Dark Chocolate and the color pink. Every person attending was given a small white bag of Dove Dark Chocolates and a pink artificial carnation. A note attached to each one stated: “Carnations are a symbol of heartfelt gratitude to say thank you, and I will never forget you.” Ryan Davis took photos during the festivities for Birdie to enjoy in the future. Several friends helped make the party run smoothly. The party was organized and hosted by three of Birdie’s caregivers: Judy Metzger, Nancy Neal and Karen Davis.
