Sometimes it is best to let a conversation die in awkward silence.
Ever have one of those awkward conversations? Someone says something that may be awkward, offensive, or simply obtuse. You can find no verbal reply that will not make the situation worse, and bopping the other on the head would not be appropriate for the time or place. I have certainly had those. Usually, other people have them with me as I say something and they silently walk away.
I was reading through and editing an unpublished novel when I came across this line. I did not remember writing it, but it certainly rang true.
