Bhubaneswar, July 25: Every married wishes to embrace parenthood at some stage in their lifetime. The beauty of giving birth to a new life and seeing him grow in front of your eyes, watching him take baby steps, witnessing him utter his first words, is a feeling that would melt even a stone-hearted man.But there are many such couples who due to some problems are unable to achieve this happiness. These days there are many techniques to help the couples facing infertility issues.
The year 1978 brought about a breakthrough in the history of medical sciences. The remarkable change was brought about by Dr. Patrick Steptoe, the pioneer of in vitro fertilisation (IVF). The first test tube baby, Louise Brown was born on July 25, 1978 to parents Lesley and Peter Brown in Oldham, northwest of England.
The Brown couple failed to conceive even after multiple attempts. The reason behind her infertility was her blocked fallopian tube, which is where the meeting of the egg and the sperm occurs.
Due to a blockage, her egg was unable to reach the oviduct (fallopian tube). It was then that they chose to undergo IVF in order to embrace parenthood. In vitro fertilisation is a kind of artificial reproductive technology (ART) where the fertilisation that is the fusion of the male and female gametes is done artificially by simulating the temperature and other conditions of the human body in the laboratory.
Later on after years the couple became parents for the second time by the same technology and Natalie Brown was born. In May 1999, Natalie became the first test tube baby to get impregnated by natural conception, proving false the misconception that female IVF babies were unable to conceive naturally.
