Charles’s 30th birthday was also marked in a somewhat lavish manner. A party was thrown at Buckingham Palace, with entertainment provided by his favourite disco-makers, US trio the Three Degrees. Their Givin’ Up, Givin In has always been one of Charles’s favourite songs, with Charles confessing in 2021 that it provided him with ‘an irresistible urge to get up and dance’. Other birthdays of Charles’s have also involved musical big-hitters, with his 31st seeing Shirley Bassey sing happy birthday to him.
However, for his 75th the King has gone for an altogether more earthy approach to the music. Focusing on community responsibilities, he invited a local rock choir to provide live music for the afternoon tea he shared with local 75 year olds at Highgrove.
Charles’s 50th birthday in 1998 was a particularly opulent affair. 850 guests were invited to the soiree, including leading entertainment lights such as Joanna Lumley, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson. Needless to say, anyone who has 850 friends to invite to their birthday must be doing something right. Perhaps it is Charles’s scorpio dynamism and charm. Champagne flowed throughout the night and the late Queen made a toast to her son celebrating his ‘diligence, compassion and leadership'. He replied: 'Mummy... I don't know how you have put up with me.’
A well-noted absence was Camilla Parker Bowles. This was taken to be a demonstration of the Queen’s attempt to keep her son’s relationship with Camilla under wraps, only a year after Princess Diana’s death. Charles is known to have celebrated separately with Camilla at Highgrove.
