Galentine’s Day is the best unofficial holiday of the year, full stop. For those of you who have not yet been blessed by the gospel of Leslie Knope, allow me to fill you in on the holiday's history. Galentine’s Day originated on the show Parks and Recreation, where the main character, Leslie (played by Amy Poehler), hosted an annual brunch on the day before Valentine’s Day to celebrate her girlfriends.
“Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home and we just come and kick it, breakfast style,” she explains in the episode. “Ladies celebrating ladies.” For your viewing pleasure, it's in season 2, episode 16, aptly titled “Galentine’s Day.”
The whole point of Galentine’s Day is to give us an opportunity to acknowledge the power of friendship, because the love between friends is just as formative and important as romantic love. You can celebrate it however you like, whether it’s with a waffle-filled brunch à la Leslie, a fun night on the town, or a movie-and-wine night in. You don’t have to exchange gifts, but you can if you want to. All that matters is that you take a sec to say thanks to your girls for being there for you through thick and thin.
You can post your boo on actual Valentine’s Day, but Galentine’s Day 2024 is for the girlies.
