Free thinking isn’t critical thinking

First there were “alternative facts.” Then came “fake news.” Now, we have “free thinkers.” After Kanye West sent the Internet into an uproar after professing his love for Donald Trump and posting pictures with a MAGA hat, he appeared this week on an interview with TMZ and said, “When you hear about slavery for 400 years ... For 400 years? That sounds like a choice.” In defense of his asinine and sometimes false statements, West has proclaimed to be a “free thinker.” He wants people to be freed from mental slavery. Despite West saying he’s not beholden to any political party, conservatives and President Trump jumped at the opportunity to use his words to mock liberals and Democrats for daring to criticize the rapper. “Free thinking” is not the same as “critical thinking,” and it’s a shame that the term is now being used to define the sharing of ideas devoid of research and historical context, false narratives and contrarian positions. While I fully support differences of opinion and enlightened thought, I can’t get behind promoting false historical narratives. There is nothing “free” about being used as a political tool to bash an opposing party or promote propaganda.
