As expected, royal baby Archie's birth certificate emerged Friday and it shows the newborn son of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan of Sussex was born at the Portland Hospital, an American-owned medical center in London's Westminster district.
The Press Association, a British wire service akin to the Associated Press, obtained a copy of the baby's birth certificate and tweeted it out Friday, clearing up one of the big mysteries about the May 6 birth of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, Queen Elizabeth II's eighth great-grandchild: Where was he born?
Harry and Meghan had declined to specify the location of their son's birth when they introduced him to the world on May 8 at Windsor Castle, posing for photos and video. Later, the newest royal met the queen, Prince Philip and Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland, who traveled from Los Angeles for the birth of her first grandchild.
Up until Friday, Buckingham Palace has steadfastly declined to comment on the location of the birth. But the secret was destined not to last: As in the United States, birth certificates are public record and easily obtainable by any person.
Harry's brother, Prince William and his wife, Duchess Kate of Cambridge, registered their three children within days of their births at St. Mary's Hospital in London, starting in with Prince George in 2013. They later released copies of the birth certificates to the media.
Harry and Meghan took a different approach, sending the paperwork directly to the registrar without releasing it to the public. The document is dated Friday, May 17.
The birth certificate, which was signed by Harry, lists his full name, His Royal Highness Henry Charles Albert David Duke of Sussex, and Meghan's too: Rachel Meghan, Her Royal Highness Duchess of Sussex. Their official residence is listed as Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor Castle estate.
Harry's occupation is listed as "Prince of the United Kingdom" and Meghan's as "Princess of the United Kingdom," although her official title is that of royal duchess. Similar language was used for Kate on the birth certificates for their three children.
Meghan, 37, is not the first royal to give birth at Portland: Harry's York cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were born there, too.
The plan had reportedly been for Meghan, who was said to be due in late April or early May, to have a home birth at Frogmore. She decided against giving birth at St. Mary's, where Princess Diana had William and Harry and Kate had her kids. She was praised for her decision not to face a media mob within hours of giving birth, as her sister-in-law had. So too was her choice not to hide her postpartum baby bump during Archie's public debut on May 8.
According to reporting by the Daily Mail, Meghan, who was by then overdue, was spirited out of Windsor by her security detail overnight Sunday into Monday and rushed to the Portland in London.
She was in labor in the early hours of Monday, the palace said, and Archie was born at 5:26 a.m. local time, weighing 7 lbs, 3 ounces.
Buckingham Palace declined to confirm the rush-to-the-hospital account but it had already been widely accepted in the U.K., and the birth certificate seems to confirm it.
