Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden's male polar bear Little One celebrated his 30th birthday on Dec. 13.
This is a big birthday. Little One is the second oldest male polar bear in the U.S. zoo population. The median age for male polar bears is 21. A press release from the zoo says his age can be attributed to the care he receives, which includes daily enrichment, a nutritious diet and a comfortable environment inside and out.
"He’s been with us for a long time, and we wanted to make his 30th special,” said Head Keeper of Bears Lisa Vollmer in a press release. “The cake, which was made of a combination of Little One’s favorite food items, was a big hit.”
Little One's mate, Anana, has been denning since Nov. 1. "Care staff remains hopeful that she may be pregnant & she is being monitored round-the-clock by a team of experienced Zoo Volunteer Observers," Cincinnati Zoo wrote on Twitter.
"The best birthday gift possible would be for a polar bear cub to be born today! In addition to it being Little One’s 30th, this week is the 30th anniversary of the last time a polar bear was born at the Cincinnati Zoo," Cincinnati Zoo said in a press release.
Anana celebrated her 19th birthday on Dec. 12. She did not get any birthday cake but instead spent the day sleeping in her den, according to a tweet from the zoo.
Little One has never had children, despite being matched with several female polar bears over the years. He has been with Anana for three breeding seasons.
