1970 – Birth of one of Australia’s most successful Captains and opening batters, Belinda Clark. She led Australia to victory in the 1997 World Cup, during which she became the first player — man or woman — to hit a double-century in One-Day International (ODI) cricket
1972 – In the inaugural Olympic archery competition in Munich, John Williams won the men’s individual gold medal while Doreen Wilber took the women’s gold. Both were American
1972 – West Germany beat Pakistan 1-0 to become first European nation since 1920 to win the field hockey Olympic title. In the last ten minutes of the gold medal match, the umpires had to stop play as Pakistani fans ran onto the pitch, while their players and officials repeatedly remonstrated with the umpires. At the final whistle, Pakistani fans and officials invaded the pitch and assaulted West German police and poured a bucket of water over International Hockey Federation President Rene Frank, while the players destroyed their locker room

1973 – Birth of Syrian heptathlete Ghada Shouaa. She won Syria’s first Olympic gold in 1996
1986 – Eoin Morgan was born today. He gained initial recognition with an ODI century for Ireland in the World Cricket League. His performances for Middlesex in the 2008 T20 Cup earned him a call-up to the England squad. After a successful World T20, which England won, Morgan got a surprise Test call-up against Bangladesh and scored his maiden hundred in his third Test, against Pakistan. In 2011, Morgan became the second player after Kepler Wessels to captain against his old team – Ireland in this case, in an ODI in Dublin. From June 2015 to July 2018, England won 13 out of their 16 full bilateral ODI series
