Quote of the Day: Aragorn on Knowing Right from Wrong in Confusing Times – Ricochet - Ricochet.com

Éomer: How shall a man judge what to do in such times?

Aragorn: As he has ever judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man’s part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house.

Good advice for our times.

I don’t have the solution to the situation in Ukraine.  I don’t know how to persuade an unserious country to take seriously its debt problem. There are a zillion things I don’t know about what’s going on with wars, vaccines, governments, and the extreme reorganization attempted on every aspect of human life over the last two years.

It’s nice to be reminded by no less a hero than Aragorn speaking to no less a hero than Éomer that it’s often confusing even for the wisest of Men, Elves, and Dwarves; that our job is to discern as best we can; and that right and wrong haven’t changed.

The old ways didn’t go out of fashion since Moses, Confucius, Plato, Jesus, and Kant. They didn’t go out of style in 2020, and they aren’t going to go out of style in 2022. The ancient paths and the good way are still there, and we may walk in them and find rest for our souls; see Jeremiah 6:16.

When in confusion, we can always start by doing something good in some place where there isn’t confusion.  We may not know how to fix Europe, but maybe we can send some money to help the refugees in Poland.  Meanwhile, reading a Psalm, saying a prayer, and looking for the next chance to love our neighbors as we love ourselves is always a good strategy.
